We are unable to issue letters stating patients are ‘fit to fly’.
This is due to our General Practitioners (GPs) not having the expertise to assess whether someone can fly.
The best person to contact would be your hospital – they will be able to assess you and then inform your airline of any conditions.
Pregnant women might be able to request certain paperwork from their midwife or obstetrician.
As per the Civil Aviation Authority:
Most airlines have medical advisors who provide advice and ‘clear’ passengers as fit to fly. The key information that they require is:
- the nature of the individual’s condition and its severity/stability
- medication being taken
- any pertinent information about mobility
The final decision whether or not to carry a passenger is that of the airline, but the more information that is provided in advance, the more likely it is that a reasonable, evidence based decision can be made.
